The Middle Ground Collaborative

About The Middle Ground

About

The Middle Ground is a winter day program designed to provide a safe, welcoming place for individuals to come inside, stay warm, and connect during the coldest months of the year.

Located between two community churches, this collaborative effort helps bridge the gap between daytime and overnight services by providing a consistent space where guests can rest, build connections, and access support.

Through the partnership of Hope Church, Grace Episcopal Church, and the Sheboygan County Warming Center, The Middle Ground creates a place where individuals experiencing homelessness can find warmth, community, and resources when they need them most.

Location

The Middle Ground is located across the street from our home base at St. Luke United Methodist Church and operates through a partnership between Hope Church and Grace Episcopal Church.

Hope Church (612 Ontario Ave., Sheboygan WI. 53081) hosts space Monday through Friday.

Grace Episcopal Church (1011 N 7th St., Sheboygan WI. 53081) hosts space Saturdays and Sundays.

Seasonal Hours

The Middle Ground operates during the winter months:

  • Monday through Sunday: 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM

How it started

Bridging the Gap Through Community

The Middle Ground Collaborative was created by listening, learning, and responding to a need in our community. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we regularly visit other shelters and warming centers to learn best practices, share ideas, and discover new ways to better support our neighbors.

During a visit to a warming center in Minnesota, our Executive Director, Liz, asked a simple but important question: “What is one thing our community is missing?” The answer was clear: a day program.

At the time, individuals leaving the Community Cafe often faced a five-hour gap before the Warming Center opened for the evening. During the coldest months of the year, this meant many people had nowhere warm and safe to go after daytime services ended.

Recognizing this barrier, we worked with community partners to create a solution. The Middle Ground Collaborative was born—a welcoming winter day program providing a place for individuals to come inside, stay warm, build connections, and access support during the hours when it was needed most.

The Middle Ground represents what we believe community care should look like: listen to the needs, identify the barriers, and work together to create solutions.

Why Day Programs Matter

Winter conditions can create serious health risks for individuals who spend extended periods of time outdoors. Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can increase the risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold-related health concerns.

The Middle Ground helps provide an important layer of support by offering a place where individuals can prioritize their well-being, take a break from the elements, and have access to a safer environment during the day.
